Brendan Willing James’ ‘In the Colors’ is out now on our label Echo Magic.

This is an album of firsts.

Looking back through photos from that time I’m reminded we were still parents of our first and only child. That's the big first.

It was also the first session I got to do with Mikael Jorgensen from Wilco on keys.

I feel so lucky that the first time I got to do a session with a keyboard player from one of my favorite bands he brought such a spirit of play and fun and gratitude that it resonated deeply throughout the session and through my life. 2018 was a time of real confusion for me in the music business and the tone he set was personally much needed.

The firsts continue….
It was the first session I called Scott Hirsch to come engineer and mix a record.
It was the first co-production I called Daniel Wright in to work with me as co-producer.

Though it wasn’t the first time Brendan and I had worked together, it feels so good to have someone come back to me and trust me to bring their precious songs from their voice memos to your record player. That level of trust is so profound that it always feels like the first time.

And now, it’s amongst our first releases as a label.

There are so many stories to tell, hopefully you can hear it in the music.
